Mastering Powerful Governance
Learning from nearly 30 years of experience as a commercial lawyer and witnessing the insufficiency of the law & legal systems in providing a governance system that fully supports strategic organisational success, I created a programme called Mastering Powerful Governance to address the governance aspects of leadership frustration.
Business leaders have a multitude of things to consider, especially when they are going through change. Governance is often left to the company secretary or the accountant or lawyer. However effective governance doesn’t rely solely on accurate and timely filings, compliance with codes of conduct or policies and making correct disclosures important as they are. It also speaks to organisational design, risk management and the effective application of leadership characteristics such as judgement, empathy, foresight and tone. My purposely designed programme offers initial assessment (including a change readiness assessment) organisational design assessment, document review, analysis, congruent solution design, effective implementation through coaching and training, and final measurement to assess degree of improvement.

Non-executive Board Consulting
I have served on a number of boards from the private and NGO sectors and occupied a variety of roles including that of Chairman and Deputy Chairman. My experience has convinced me that well meaning, sometimes highly gifted people, often completely miss the purpose of board leadership, resulting in weakness in governance sometimes with dire consequences.

Conflict Resolution & Complex Problem Solving
Conflicts occur in organisations for many reasons, some of which are more readily identifiable than others – for instance struggles for supremacy, squabbles over scarce resources, and leadership style complaints are commonplace and easy to define. Others however, may be caused by much deeper systemic issues, or of historical origin perhaps, or not even connected with the organisation at all, that are not so readily solvable by the human resources department or the other usual means given that they are so deeply buried or oblique.
This is one reason why legal interventions often fail to bring the solutions the parties desire: the legal principles address symptoms and are not able to access the deeper causes and problems often nest inside deeper and deeper causes – so that when an outer problem is resolved it often reveals yet another deeper one, and so on until the core issue is settled. Also, law utilises the principle of precedent on the assumption that one can solve a problem by looking at similar ones that occurred in the past, and apply the same or similar problem solving theory to the current challenge. Law looks solely to the past. Yet for complex problems involving human organisms, whilst they do have a historical element, they also present an opportunity for the emergence of a future aspect, something new waiting to be born that will address the current issue. My problem solving approaches also provide open space for what is to emerge. Only after the newly determined process or solution design is implemented, do we craft a legal model to support the model.
